GOING IN CIRCLES: Dutch-style roundabout in Hemel Hempstead receives mixed responses

Published on: 30th January 2025   |   By: Panayiota Demosthenous   |   Category: Uncategorized

Work has begun on a new Dutch-style roundabout in Hemel Hempstead.

Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) has begun improvement works at the roundabout between Boundary Way and Buncefield Lane. The new roundabout will include a dedicated space for cyclists around the entire junction, as well as widened footways and new pedestrian crossings.

Residents launched a petition to keep Three Cherry Trees Lane open during the roadworks, which has received nearly 1,500 signatures.

On Friday, January 10, HCC’s executive member for highways and transport councillor Phil Bibby spoke to Mike Graham on TalkTV in a heated debate.

Cllr Bibby referred to the increase in jobs across the town which would lead to more cars and “gridlock” if not for the new roundabout, which is set to be completed in June this year.

Mike responded by asking if HCC “asked the people of Hemel Hempstead if they wanted it”.

Mike then questioned cllr Bibby on the use of his car after the councillor suggested that the aim of the roundabout is to promote walking and cycling, ending the interview with: “Phil Bibby there, who’s got a car but doesn’t want you to have one.”

Social media has been inundated with responses from residents, many referring to the similar roundabouts in Sheffield and Cambridge. The latter has closed due to an increase in collisions.

One said: “We need a proper hospital, not some overpriced, dangerous roundabout!”

A spokesperson for HCC said: “We are aware that a petition has been created on change.org seeking to keep Cherry Trees Lane open during the works. We we would recommend that those who wish to present their views to HCC or who are seeking for a decision to be considered by a panel they do so via our online petition portal. If our online portal is used, if a threshold is met in line with our constitution, we have a duty to present and consider the matter.”

First, most of the traffic using this roundabout is to or from the M1. I’ve never seen a pedestrian at this roundabout and virtually no cyclists. Did the council count how many are using it or are they living in the dream world where we’re all going to be riding bicycles in the rain and cold?

I recall seeing a pedestrian in that roundabout around June 1997

    Yes, that was me!

To be fair, I was lost and after everyone in their cars laughed and pointed at me, I ran off to Leverstock Green.
