When Sandridge School pupils returned from their Christmas break on Tuesday January 7, there was one more present waiting for them – a library in a double-decker bus!
Nine months of hard work all culminated in the moment when the bus was officially opened by local children’s author Jeanne Willis.
Prior to this, the school did not have a separate library space, instead having reading corners in each classroom.
It is hoped the bus will foster a love of reading within pupils. If its inaugural week is anything to go by, it seems like it will do just that!
Speaking to STALBANSnews, headteacher Lis Roberts said: “To have something like this to get the children excited about reading is fantastic.
“Children are already choosing books they would not normally pick up.”
The bus is carpeted and has heating and electricity, with fiction books upstairs and non-fiction downstairs.
When the ribbon was cut, Lis said that there was a lot of “whooping, cheering and clapping” from the children.
