GEARED UP: 71 year old Bushey resident set to take driving test for first time

A 71 year old Bushey resident is taking a driving test after deciding to get behind the wheel later in life.

Jennifer Meadows began learning to drive a year ago with driving instructor Andy Diamond who runs Andy’s Knowledge Automatic School. Andy was a black cab driver for over 30 years and after retiring from shuttling Londoners, decided to set up a driving school with a name in homage to the Knowledge, the notoriously difficult test which requires black cabbies to know the name and location of every street in central London and the quickest route to it.

Speaking to BUSHEYnews, Jenny said she had never needed to learn because she was always driven around by her husband and had walked to her job at Sainsbury’s.

She said: “I was kind of bullied into it eventually but I did want my freedom. I was petrified to start with but love it now – Andy has been great.”

Jenny is taking her test for the first time on April 18 and says she feels “positive.”

She said: “It’s not life changing but it would be really nice to have. It would allow me to drive back home to Lincolnshire where my son and two stepdaughters live.”

Andy says he has been deeply impressed by Jenny’s attitude especially when she passed her theory first time to the sound of applause at the testing centre.

He said: “It’s quite hard to learn as you get older because remembering things is more challenging but Jenny has been amazingly dedicated.”
