FRUIT FLOCK: Plans revealed for sheep to graze at Chorleywood Community Orchard

Published on: 16th February 2024   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Residents may soon see sheep grazing at Chorleywood Community Orchard if a new proposal goes ahead.

The orchard, which was created at Chorleywood House Estate in 2008, currently has 140 apple, plum and cherry trees, many of which grow rare Hertfordshire varieties of the fruits.

However, under new plans, the area could also become home to a flock of sheep, with Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) collaborating with the Countryside Management Service on the proposal.

In a draft document on the TRDC website, it is stated that around 400 metres of fencing will be required to enclose the orchard, with three kissing gates installed at locations where current paths run through the site, as well as a vehicle gate.

The document adds: “The proposed management by conservation grazing would enhance the overall biodiversity of the grassland with different structures of grasses and flowering plants.”

If the project is given the go-ahead, a trial run of 10 sheep grazing for eight weeks between July and September will be launched.
