COMMUNITY AID: Project launched to help elderly victims of burglary in London

Published on: 16th February 2024   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

Met Police officers have launched a new initiative aiming to provide aftercare for elderly residents in Northwood and beyond who have been victims of a burglary.

Project Palisade brings together officers, local councils and the NHS to ensure those who have recently experienced burglary are helped to feel safe again.

This can include referrals to the council for new alarms or locks to be fitted, or getting police officers to call Age UK, who can organise face-to-face or phone meetings with the victim to discuss their concerns.

Police have also become aware that burglaries often occur in areas with ongoing roadworks, with the work providing cover for the thieves.

Working in partnership with Thames Water, officers were provided with a list of planned roadworks across west London. Neighbourhood teams were then deployed to those areas to warn residents of the potential risk and provide advice.

Detective Inspector Tom Collins, who set up Project Palisade, said: “The impact of burglaries on anyone – but especially the elderly community who often live alone – cannot be underestimated.

“We know that their trauma does not end when the burglary is over, but rather it often leaves them feeling anxious, depressed and unable to feel safe in their homes again.”
