FROM RUSSIA: Classical musician from Radlett excited for new album release

Published on: 18th July 2021   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

An established classical musician from Radlett is excited for the release of his unique new album in September.

Pure enjoyment is provided by this delightful new recording of popular Russian music arranged for clarinet and orchestra by resident, Robin White.

Arranger and conductor Robin, of Kendals Close, is hoping the Radlett community will enjoy the new record, called From Russia: Music for Clarinet and Orchestra, which was recorded during lockdown.

Robin, who has enjoyed a very busy and varied career since his first recording in 1992, explained: “Having previously conducted open-air pop-classics concerts across the south of England in the late 90’s/early Noughties, and prior to that been involved in light opera and musicals, faced with COVID restrictions I decided to resurrect something that I wrote many years ago, and see if I could get it recorded.

“The result – an album of folksy Russian music, all arranged for solo clarinet and orchestra – is due for release this autumn, on the Anglo-American Divine Art label.

“It features the Royal Ballet Sinfonia – that’s the orchestra that accompanies Birmingham Royal Ballet, and much else besides – with their principal clarinettist, Ian Scott, as soloist.

“Much of it is straight transcriptions of classics by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky –Korsakov, coupled with my own versions of Russian folk themes.

“These latter should strike a familiar note with many Radlett residents, particularly those with Russian or central European ancestry.

“The recording sessions were held at Henry Wood Hall in south London, and were challenging, to say the least! The orchestral players had to socially distance, which presents ensemble problems (keeping together).”

Despite the challenges faced, Robin and his ensemble successfully created From Russia: Music for Clarinet and Orchestra, which will be released on September 10 on the Divine Art label.
