Free live shows as Watford celebrates Make Music Day UK

Published on: 21st June 2018   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

A day of free live performances will be staged by Watford Borough Council at the Big Bandstand in Cassiobury Park to celebrate Make Music Day UK.

The fun will begin at 9.30am when Cassiobury Junior School discover the joys of making music during an educational visit.

Then 90 talented students from the American state of Indiana will perform from 12noon-2pm as part of the Voyageurs Ambassadors of Music (USA) ensemble.

Electric Umbrella – a unique collective of professional musicians and adults with learning disabilities – will perform from 2.30-4pm after travelling to the park on a barge, setting off at 10am.

The bandmates will busk along the Grand Union Canal as they travel by boat from Kings Langley to Cassiobury, with mini gigs at all of the locks en-route.

They will be followed at Big Bandstand by jazz, blues and soul singer Gordon Mark Webber performing from 4.30-6pm, and ska and mod band The Iconics playing from 6.30-8pm.

Peter Taylor, elected Mayor of Watford, said: “I can’t wait to celebrate Make Music Day UK on the longest day of the year. We’ll have the best local and global musicians, performing for us in the beautiful surroundings of our wonderful park. Bring a picnic or grab some food from The Cha Cafe or Daisy’s in the Park, and make the most of this amazing summertime celebration.”

Make Music Day UK is celebrated in 120 countries around the world – created locally and connected globally – to provide free music events on the longest day of the year.

If you can’t make it on Thursday, there will be three further free live shows at the Big Bandstand this weekend.

South Oxhey Community Choir will perform from 2-4pm on Saturday (23 June). The Voyageurs Ambassadors of Music (USA) will send a band from Colorado, comprised of 270 members, to perform from 12noon-1.30pm on Sunday (24 June).

Finally, the Bushey & District Jazz Band – or Badje for short – will perform from 2-4pm on the same day.

The free live shows will continue at Big Bandstand until late September. To see the full line-up, visit watfordbigevents.co.uk/bigbandstand
