PLAY-OFFS: Heartbreak for St Albans Saints as they fall at the last hurdle to promotion

Published on: 15th May 2023   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: St Albans City F.C

St Albans City FC’s promotion hopes were dashed with a 4-0 loss against Oxford City in the play-off final this weekend.

On Sunday, May 14, at the RAW Charging Stadium in Oxford, the Saints had the opportunity to secure a spot in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, for only the second time in their history.

However, this dream was quickly shattered as Oxford delivered a dominant performance that saw all four goals in the game scored within the first 45 minutes.

The second half saw the Saints dominate possession of the ball, but by then the damage had been done and Oxford were happy to defend their lead until the final whistle blew.

Despite having squeaked past Chelmsford City and Dartford on their way to the final, St Albans fell down easily to the Hoops, who will now claim promotion to the fifth tier for the first time.

Speaking after the match, Saints manager David Noble said: “I’m devastated; devastated to get this far, have the season we’ve had and then to put a showing on like that in the final game was really hard to take.

“Credit to Oxford; they’re a good side. Coming into it, I thought it would be us and them in the final, and that’s the way it’s planned out, and they were the much better team on the day.”
