FOOTY FUNDRAISER: Charity football match in Berkhamsted raises thousands of pounds

Published on: 31st July 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Berkhamsted FC stand that has been renamed after a late resident was unveiled at a charity football match last month.

Since 20-year-old Sammy Dormer lost his life to rare cancer in November 2021, his family have supported the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) with multiple fundraisers. Mum Amelia launched her own sweet company, Sammy’s Sweets, and last summer, a charity match was held in Sammy’s honour at the Glencar Stadium.

Billed as ‘The Rematch’, the community was out in force again to see family and friends compete, with the Veterans taking on the Youngsters on July 24.

Amelia said: “It’s an emotional day, but it’s all about fundraising and pulling the community together.

“The main goal is to make sure he’s never forgotten; I’m adamant with that. Wherever I am, I’ll make sure we can have his name.”

Sammy’s grandparents Barb and Ginny said: “We’ve got mixed emotions. We’ll keep this going every year now. We feel everyone has been so supportive.

“Sammy would be loving it, although he’d probably be embarrassed and say, ‘All this for me?’ but he’d love seeing everyone together.”

Before the match, the ribbon surrounding the newly labelled Sammy Dormer stand was cut, with plans in process to instal a commemorative plaque.

Chairman of Berkhamsted FC Steve Davis said: “We have teamed up with TCT as our charity partner and will work with them to raise money throughout the year by letting them use our facilities for various events. The canal end stand has been renamed the Sammy Dormer stand [and] we will do what we can to help raise money for a fantastic charity.”

The match, which the Youngsters snatched on penalties, raised £7,700 for TCT.
