FOND FAREWELL: Beloved Tring preschool closes its doors after nearly 50 years

Published on: 10th August 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

A beloved Tring preschool is closing after nearly 50 years of helping generations of young residents take their first steps into independence.

ABC Preschool began as Akeman Street Baptist Playgroup. When it first opened, it featured toys, a doll’s house, a book corner, a home corner, and a climbing frame and slide. There were trips out and visits from people from different walks of life who the children would meet in their everyday lives.

But 48 years later, the preschool is closing down.

Speaking to TRINGnews, a spokesperson for the preschool said: “Over the years, there have been lots of changes. Louise Cobby described her time as playgroup leader as one of transition, as greater government regulation meant greater scrutiny of the curriculum and Ofsted inspections.

“It was pleasing to receive a letter from Ofsted saying that the provision is ‘Outstanding’. Throughout, we aimed to provide a happy, caring environment for the children.”

Current preschool leader Sandra Turland said: “ABC is a very special place and I take away happy memories of my time there.”

A reunion is being planned on Saturday, September 7, and the school is pleased to announce that a new ABC Tots will open next month. For more information, please visit www.akemanstreet.org
