FOND FAREWELL: Abbots Langley youth team wins the league on last day of the season

In their last-ever match as a youth football side, Abbots Langley Youth FC’s Under 18s side claimed victory and won the league.

It was an emotional game for the squad, some of whom have been playing together as a youth side since they were eight years old.

They’ve had a triumphant final run, managing to get to the semi-finals of the West Herts Youth League’s annual cup competition.

Despite three losses at the start of their season in Division Two, they went on to have a 10-game winning streak which meant that on the final day, they needed one more win to clinch the title.

They went down 1-0 at half-time, but after a rousing team talk, the boys performed in a spectacular style and finished the match as 3-2 winners and league champions.

Manager Costas Joannides said: “The celebrations on the day and at presentation night highlighted to me what football is all about: teamwork, respect, principles, friendship and, most of all, memories that will live with the lads, parents and us all forever.”

The team has now become Abbots Athletic and joined the Watford Sunday League as an adult team.

They are currently looking for a shirt sponsor, so if you are able to offer any help, please contact Costas on 07815 047771.
