ROYAL ROLE: Former Hemel pupil appointed as His Majesty’s ambassador to Yemen

Lawyer and diplomat Abda Sharif OBE, a former pupil at Longdean School in Hemel Hempstead, has been appointed as the UK’s new ambassador to Yemen.

Abda previously held the position of Head of the Iraq and Arabian Peninsula Department in the Middle East, and North Africa Directorate at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

From September, Abda will represent the King and the UK government in Yemen, and will be responsible for the direction of the embassy, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and other services.

On Twitter, she posted: “Delighted to be the next UK ambassador to Yemen. Look forward to returning to the Middle East, and to working with the excellent UK in Yemen.”

This comes at a time when the UN is putting pressure on the Yemeni government and the Islamist political organisation Houthis to reach an agreement and end the nine-year-long civil war.
