FINE MARGINS: Tight Corby win ends Berkhamsted FC’s unbeaten run

An intense top-of-the-table clash between BetVictor Southern Football League Division One Central duo Corby Town and Berkhamsted FC on Saturday (November 23) stripped the latter side of both the top spot and an unbeaten streak.

The thrilling encounter between the league giants ended 3-2 at Steel Park to Corby, but the Berko players will be incredibly proud of the effort they put in – and there’s an awfully long way still to go this season.

The away side showed their resolve to claw their way back into the game after going 2-0 down, but Ryan Robins stole the win for Corby in the end to leave a bitter taste in Berko mouths.

The match was truly underway when Corby’s Charlie Wise headed past Berko ‘keeper Comas Leon in the 27th minute following a rebound off the bar.

Lewis Toomey probably should’ve levelled it immediately after but headed over at the near post.

It was only five minutes later when the home side doubled their advantage with some impressive football being capped off with a finish from Burge. 2-0.

Berko got a crucial goal back before half time courtesy of a corner. Summerfield put the ball in for Stephen Hatch to bundle home. 2-1.

The Comrades started the second half positively, with Mulligan producing an excellent challenge to deny Toomey as he set himself to shoot.

They made it level in the 59th minute when Matt Cooper raced on to a pass and beat Worby with a low shot.

But it was Corby’s third goal in the 63rd minute which proved decisive. Ryan Robins scored from close range and while the Comrades still threatened to pull level again, the opposition’s ‘keeper managed to foil their attacks.

Almost 500 fans turned out for the epic encounter which left Corby just two points ahead of the Comrades.
