Residents of Hertsmere paid £25,590 in fly tipping fines during 2022/23, which equates to the highest figure per capita in all of Hertfordshire and the third highest at a national level.
Analysis conducted by The Shelter Expert reveals that between 2022 and 2023, there were 1,105 instances of fly tipping reported in Hertsmere, costing £2,367 per 100,000 residents.
The only areas in which managing fly tipping exceeded this cost were Gravesham in Kent and Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire.
Wayne Patman, founder of The Shelter Expert, said: “Fly tipping, which is the illegal disposal of waste, poses significant risks to the environment, contaminating waterways, soil and wildlife habitats. This pollution can, in some cases, lead to long-term ecological damage.”
A spokesperson for Hertsmere Borough Council said: “The level of fines issued for fly tipping in our borough reflects our determination, along with that of our partner organisations, to tackle the problem and ensure those responsible pay for this anti-social behaviour.”
