GLOW-UP: Three creatives launch multi-media installation in Watford underpass

Three local residents have joined forces to create a striking installation in Watford aiming to celebrate the town.

Six panels have been installed in the underpass at the top of Cassiobury Park, displaying paintings by local artist Fran Kershaw. The artworks are from her series, 100 Views of Watford, and depict views from the nearby overpass.

Attached to the panels are QR codes, which allow the viewer to access musical preludes composed by another Watford local, George Moorhouse. George took the paintings on loan for nine months to inspire his music, which was created as a direct response to the artworks.

The graphics for the installation were designed by WATFORDnews’ very own designer, Chloe Lawrence.

George said: “Growing up, I always felt deeply inspired by the work of Claude Debussy. He often composed pieces directly linked to images, paintings and postcards. I was fascinated with the idea of converting the visual landscape into a musical landscape.”

Fran, who has been painting Watford for the last 20 years, said: “I think we are lucky in Watford to have so many people be inspired by our town.

“Finding a way to share music with the public in the way we so easily do with visual art has been a wonderful challenge, one brilliantly responded to by Chloe, who produced the graphics allowing us to do just that.”

The installation will remain at the underpass until June 2026.
