A man who aimed to run 62 ultramarathons in 62 days dropped into St Albans in the midst of his challenge.
Frank Wainwright, 54, recently took on a 2,000-mile running and writing project called Frank’s Big TOE (Tour of England). He ran through 42 cathedral cities and also covered five national trails and six national parks throughout July and August, while also posting a daily postcard blog.
As STALBANSnews went to print, Frank had raised just over £16,000 of his £60,000 target for various youth development charities, including the Brathay Trust.
On Saturday, July 20, Dean of St Albans Jo Kelly-Moore welcomed Frank and his wife to St Albans Cathedral and presented them with pilgrim badges. Frank and his wife then continued on to St Paul’s in London.
STALBANSnews spoke to Frank on day 39, while he was hiking along a stretch of countryside in Devonshire.
He said: “It’s been relentless – every day is a train you never get off, but I feel in pretty good shape.
“Fifty per cent of this has been about the running and hiking and 50 per cent has been about storytelling. It’s about telling the story of England and capturing an English summer.
“I arrived in St Albans early Saturday morning as people were setting up the market – it was a lovely place to come into. In Dean Jo, I couldn’t have asked for a warmer or more qualified guide. Her passion for the cathedral was compelling and the work the cathedral is doing, like filming the peregrine falcon chicks, is great.”
