EXTRA SUPPORT: New COVID-19 marshals hit Watford town centre

Published on: 9th December 2020   |   By: Geraint Roberts   |   Category: Uncategorized

Watford Borough Council’s team of COVID-19 marshals start work in the town centre this week offering extra support to keep residents, visitors and businesses safe in the run up to Christmas and beyond.

The trained marshals will be on hand to help to ensure that social distancing, face covering and hand-washing guidelines are followed.

They will also work with local businesses to assist with measures like queue management, advising on one-way systems and social distancing in queues.

Working in pairs, the marshals will act as the council’s ‘frontline’ to help increase confidence for those visiting Watford’s town centres.

While they cannot enforce the rules, they will be connected by radio to police and council officers, who do have formal enforcement powers.

The council’s community protection team will continue to support local businesses to adjust to the latest rules under Tier 2 and welcome customers back safely.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said: “We know some people are still confused by the government’s guidance and the marshals will provide a reassuring presence in the town centre. The marshals are there to help, not punish, so if you are unclear on the rules or have any questions about how to keep yourself and your family safe and within the rules, please feel free to ask them.

“I hope everyone will play their part, be mindful of others and follow the guidelines that are in place to protect us, at all times. If you are approached by a COVID-19 marshal, please cooperate with their request and be respectful, they are doing their best in very difficult circumstances.”

Lucky Kapoor, the manager of Superdrug on Watford High Street said “The COVID-19 marshals are a great idea. Along with the terrific support we get from the council’s community protection team, these guys are helping keep us all safe in a very tough environment and they have a great positive attitude
