A gymnast from Kings Langley ran 40km to raise money for her gymnastic club after it has suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Annie Lawrence, who is eight years old and a pupil at Kings Langley Primary School ran 40km over the second lockdown as part of a campaign to raise money for her club Sapphire Gymnastics.
Several gymnasts from the club based in Hemel Hempstead took part and together they surpassed their target marathon distance and ran 216km.
Annie’s mum Sarah Lawrence spoke to KingsNews about why everyone jumped at the chance to support the club.
She said: “I don’t think most people know that it is a non-profitable organisation and like many during coronavirus they obviously suffered too.
“The club being shut had a big impact on the children’s mental health so it was something to keep the girls motivated over lockdown and we could raise money for the club as well.”
Sarah added that Annie who has been doing gymnastics since she was five years old managed to fit running around regular training which took place on Zoom in the evenings.
She said: “She ran the whole thing and each weekend she did 5km each day. She loved it because she’s very sporty and very determined.
“Annie is so passionate about gymnastics that she worked extra hard over lockdown, she got new skills and was so determined that she actually went back into the gym stronger.”
Sarah also said the club is a community, so she and other parents didn’t need to think twice and supporting them.
She said: “It’s the same as a football club, it’s so important to have backing from the parents.
“Annie spends so much time in the gym with her squad, it’s where they grow up together.”
