EVERYONE CELEBRATE: Council encourage Northwood and Ruislip residents to host street parties to commemorate VE Day

Northwood and Ruislip residents are being encouraged to hold street parties in commemoration of the end of the Second World War.

Hillingdon Council is urging locals to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) and the end of the Second World War in Europe by throwing street parties for the May Bank Holiday.

Hillingdon were part of the many towns that took to the streets to celebrate the end of the war in 1945 by dancing, having large luncheons and playing music outside.

Residents who want to organise a street party for Friday, May 8, should apply to the council for free road closures, public notices, traffic management services and public liability insurance.

However, road closures will not be allowed on bus routes and those with heavy traffic as it will cause an adverse effect.

Leader of Hillingdon Council, Ray Puddifoot, said: “We offered a free street parties service to residents who wanted to celebrate the weddings of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Queen’s 90th birthday and the Diamond Jubilee.

“I hope we can encourage everyone who enjoyed them previously to get involved again and that it will also motivate others to join in and mark this very special occasion.”

Applications can be made at hillingdon.gov.uk/VEDay75 by Friday, April 3.

Any other enquiries about the event should email Lyn Summers at streetparties@hillingdon.gov.uk
