EVER-GROWING: Abbots Langley youth football team secures promotion for third year in a row

An Abbots Langley youth football team has secured its third straight promotion – this time to the top division for their age bracket in the area.

Evergreen FC’s Under 15 Boys’ side was formed through a merger of several teams. Having started in Division 4 of the West Herts Youth League, the team has had a meteoric rise through the divisions. With multiple coaches working together, each season has seen the club earn a promotion.

They have now reached the top division, winning 12 of their 16 games, drawing two and losing two. They ended the season with an impressive 38 points – seven above Watford Town Youth in second place.

As well as that, star player Charlie Murphy has walked away with the prize for the most goals in the division this season, scoring 18 goals in the 16 games he played this year.

Speaking to ABBOTSnews about the team’s success, coach Richard Drake said: “We create a really enjoyable environment, and we teach the boys to play passing football; we don’t just want them to punt the ball to the best player.

“I’m so proud that every single one of the boys we started with has improved as we’ve gone along.”

Talking about the future of the side as an Under 16s team in the top division, Richard added: “It’s going to be a lot tougher, but we’re carrying on as before.

“The boys have got real belief. We probably won’t win the league, but to get mid-table is the goal.”

It’s been a highly successful season for Evergreen FC’s other teams as well.

The club’s Under 14 Tigers team won the West Herts Third Division and the Intermediate Cup in the same week, while their Under 14 Cobras won both the Senior Cup and the Challenge Cup on the same weekend.

The club continues to grow, with a record number of teams across all age groups already registered for next season. This includes 10 girls’ teams and a ladies’ team.

The club also recently became one of the first in the country to receive a Three Star England accreditation, the highest grading possible in grassroots football.
