SWAN SUPPORT: Charity rescues nine cygnets washed over canal weir in Nash Mills

Published on: 26th May 2023   |   By: Amy Pollard   |   Category: Uncategorized

A family of cygnets were saved after they were washed over a weir while swimming with their parents in Nash Mills last month.

The nine baby swans had been swimming in a millpond on May 15 before being washed over the edge by the current.

An onlooker called Swan Support, a charity based in Berkshire, and they quickly came and rescued the cygnets, who were under threat of drowning in the running water.

Speaking to KINGSnews, Wendy Hermon, who runs the charity with her husband Steve, said they have previously been to the site at Nash Mills for similar incidents.

She said: “We’ve been there every year for the last three years, but we’ve never seen the cygnets so small. They try to fight against the current, but it just takes them.”

Wendy and Steve returned the next week to fit a boom across the weir to prevent similar incidents from taking place.

The couple has been helping animals for 30 years and are passionate about rescuing, treating and caring for sick and injured swans.

Between May 27 and 29, the couple took part in a 32-mile pedalo challenge to raise money for the charity’s new site in Bray, which will allow them to continue helping swans.
