EN GARDE! Talented teenager from St Albans crowned U16 British fencing champion

A Garston schoolgirl has been branded a “legend” after being crowned U16 British fencing champion.

Parmiter’s School pupil Hui Xin Sezille, 14 (pictured centre), is celebrating her success at the British U16 Fencing Championships, which took place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Monday, May 6.

Speaking to GARSTONnews, Hui Xin’s dad, Gerald, revealed that the final had been “psychologically challenging”. In the final two rounds, the talented young fencer competed against two of her teammates from Paul Davis Fencing Academy (PDFA) in St Albans in both the final and semi-final.

He said: “It’s testament to the quality of the teaching and coaching at PDFA that the fencers in the final two rounds were all from the same club, but it’s definitely harder to play against a teammate than another fencer.”

The three disciplines of modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre. Each discipline uses a different kind of blade and employs its own rules. Most competitive fencers specialise in one discipline and Hui Xin has focused on the sabre, which is shorter than the foil and épée, and lighter than the épée, and therefore physically easier to move swiftly and decisively.

Following her success at the British Championships, Hui Xin is preparing for the last competition of the season, the U15 English Championships later this month, which will be held closer to home in Hatfield.

After this, there will be a short break before Hui Xin is back to training again for September and getting ready for the European circuit.

Back in January, Hui Xin was ranked fourth in the U17 category in Europe. So far this year, she has travelled to Romania, the European Championships in Naples in February, and the World Championships in Saudi Arabia in April.
