LIVES CHANGED: Employment programme supports people with learning disabilities

Published on: 27th May 2026   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Featured

A nine-week employment training programme has transformed the lives of adults with learning disabilities and autism who live in Radlett.

The programme, run by Hertsmere Mencap, helps build confidence, establish routine and reduce isolation. The course aims to equip learners with the life skills needed to move into paid or voluntary work.

They cover CV writing, interview preparation, teamwork, communication, travel training and workplace understanding – all with a personal, tailored approach.

Learner Elise said: “It’s helped me with confidence to apply for jobs.”

Running three times a year – January, April and September – the sessions take place once a week and are delivered to small groups of up to six learners, with personal tailoring to each learner.

Learners have progressed into roles with local employers, including Elstree Aerodrome Café, Hartsbourne Country Club Restaurant, De Havilland Aircraft Museum, Tesco and SOSA Basketball Club.

A manager at Elstree Aerodrome Café said: “Aaron [a graduate] has become an integral part of the team. We are happy to support such a wonderful programme.”

Based in Borehamwood, Hertsmere Mencap supports children and adults with learning disabilities and their families across Hertsmere, including Radlett. Services include adult daily activities, the employment training course and a children’s holiday club.
