‘DISAPPOINTED’: Abbots Langley residents speak out after bus service axed

Abbots Langley residents are “disappointed” after a well-used bus route was axed.

In the September edition of ABBOTSnews, we featured an article on the closure of the 318 bus route from Abbots Langley to Watford General Hospital.

Harlequin Travel, which runs the 318 bus route, cited rising costs as the reason for the closure.

Resident Christine Clark said: “Losing the 318 bus has been a real disappointment. The little red bus was so much more than just a mode of transport; it was almost like a social thing.

“Apart from that, it was reliable, unlike the number 10 that we have to depend on now. Several times over the last couple of weeks, I have been waiting for it and it has not arrived. Other people I have spoken to say the same thing.

“Many older people have stopped going into Watford at all, which is a real shame.

“I thought we were supposed to be avoiding travelling by car so much, to help the environment. Cutting our public transport is not helping, is it?  We need a better service in Abbots Langley.”

Resident Suzan Groves added: “There are many elderly and partially disabled people who used that bus and who do not have the alternative of being able to drive. It was also the quickest way to reach the town.

“I had thought I might use the [on-demand transport service] ArrivaClick but that’s only for Watford. I am facing an awful winter condemned to my cold living room.”

A spokesperson for Harlequin Travel said: “’We stopped operating the 318 bus service on September 2, 2022. We are sorry we couldn’t continue the service, but steeply rising costs meant it was longer sustainable for us to continue operation.”
