JOG ON: St Albans parkrun forced to relocate after heavy rain causes severe flooding

Published on: 22nd March 2024   |   By: Panayiota Demosthenous   |   Category: Uncategorized

The St Albans parkrun team has faced challenges over the last month after heavy rainfall led to flooding around the usual route.

Volunteer coordinator Nicola Dale explained to STALBANSnews that the team has been “thwarted” by the weather, with the path around the lake in Verulamium Park completely flooded.

She explained: “We have unusually had to cancel a few recent events, which is not a decision that we ever take lightly.

“If the grass is too wet, we will cancel as we don’t want to risk the damage that could be caused to the park by 600 pairs of feet running four laps over slippery and soggy grass.”

Despite the setbacks, the team was delighted to welcome back local legend Julien in early March following an illness. A stalwart of the event, he has previously completed 380 parkruns.

Nicola added: “We would like to publicly thank the numerous volunteers who make the event happen every week. Our regular timekeeper is Gino Gulluccio, who has now volunteered 279 times!”

The parkrun takes place at 9am every Saturday. Find out more at www.facebook.com/stalbansparkrun
