DEVELOPMENT MILESTONE: Underbridge installed in Radlett as part of new rail freight interchange project

Published on: 22nd January 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Work on the controversial Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) continues to progress, with a new 6,000 tonne underbridge structure installed at the end of December.

The structure enables the installation of the new section of track, running beneath the Midland Mainline, that will connect the SRFI to the rail network.

The news comes as developer SEGRO showed the plans to the public at Park Street Village Hall between Wednesday, January 8, and Sunday, January 12. The plans involve 335,000 square metres of sustainable logistics warehouse space and 600 acres of woodland and managed countryside.

After a long legal battle led by Fight the Freight, which claimed the land should have been protected under green belt status, the group lost their final appeal on Monday, October 7.

Charles Blake, senior director at SEGRO, told Radlett News: “The successful installation of the jack box underbridge structure is a critical first construction milestone in the development of the SRFI at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett, and the result of months of meticulous planning, preparation and delivery to ensure it could be completed during the Christmas period when the railway was already scheduled to be closed.

“In the context of the wider development, it is a relatively small component, but it is vitally important to ensuring that the freight terminal will be capable of operating by the time the first building has been constructed.”
