REMARKABLE ROW: Boys from Chalfonts raise funds following team member’s cancer diagnosis

A rugby team, including players from The Chalfonts, completed a 400km row for their friend after he received a life-changing diagnosis in February last year.

Henry joined Drifters RFC at at a young age and played the sport throughout his childhood. He also played for Chalfont St Peter Cricket Club.

Last year, Henry was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and spent months enduring tough chemotherapy.

He underwent a hemipelvectomy and reconstruction, in which part of the pelvic girdle is removed, meaning he had to learn how to walk again.

Unable to play rugby, Henry is hoping to pursue rowing in the future and inspired the Drifters RFC U15 team to take part in the 400km row to raise money for Oxford Children’s Hospital.

The group also hope to raise additional funds to go towards creating a memorable experience for Henry and his family.

A spokesperson for the team shared: “One thing that has always stuck with me about Henry since I’ve known him is his clear determination, fight and resilience. I can’t remember one time I saw Henry give up in a match, training, or any other matter!”

At Farnham Common on Sunday, January 12, the group completed the 400km row and raised more than £4,900.

A spokesperson for the event shared: “Henry’s teammates were determined to make him proud, and they completed the effort far quicker than they originally hoped to. They rowed farther than the length of the Thames!

“The boys did an amazing job. Their parents are all super proud and they hope their efforts will help raise vital funds for Oxford Children’s Hospital.”
