DEMAND CHANGE: Petition launched to make New Greens in St Albans safer

Published on: 16th February 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A petition to enforce increased safety features in the New Greens area of St Albans has recently concluded and has successfully triggered a meeting with the council.

The petition was created by St Albans resident Damian Gaskin after he was shocked at the roads while he and his daughter were out cycling.

The petition read: “We have become increasingly concerned about the lack of safe crossing points on Green Lane and Francis Avenue, which are major pedestrian routes for large numbers of children walking to and from local schools as well as forming part of route 6 of the national cycle network.”

Damian told STALBANSnews: “We need safe streets for children and vulnerable people.

“New Greens isn’t looked after very well – it has no speed limiting measures. It’s no good telling people to walk or cycle without making it safe.”

Damian’s petition on Change.org amassed 1,270 signatures. However, when it was presented to Hertfordshire County Council (HCC), Damian was allegedly told that a new petition needed to be made on the council website.

The petition on HCC’s website closed on Saturday, January 18. It received 256 signatures, meaning that it passed the threshold of requirement and has triggered a meeting with “someone in the council, according to Damian.

A spokesperson for HCC said: “We welcome the views of our residents and petitions are one way that people can get in touch. If the petition receives enough signatures from people who live or work in Hertfordshire and fulfils the necessary policy criteria, it will be considered by the council panel.”
