An Abbots Langley councillor has resigned and another has recently changed her political allegiance.
Matthew Bedford was voted in as Deputy Leader of TRDC in May 21, but resigned mere months later on July 7. Councillor Sarah Nelmes has now been voted in as his replacement. As a councillor for the Abbots Langley and Bedmond Ward, there will now be a by-election on Thursday, August 22, to find Mr Bedford’s replacement.
Meanwhile, councillor Sara Bedford, who is Mr Bedford’s wife and works at all three tiers of local government, has resigned from the Liberal Democrats and now sits as an Independent at district level. She remains as a Lib Dem for Hertfordshire County Council.
Leader of TRDC councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst said: “Matthew Bedford has stood down for personal reasons after 30 years on the council, to support his wife. He will be a loss to both Abbots Langley and the whole of Three Rivers.
“Matthew has been a dedicated councillor who will be missed by residents and colleagues.”
Matthew and cllr Bedford have been contacted for comment.
