‘DANGEROUS’: Rickmansworth resident rages as council delays fixing puncturing pothole

A woman in Rickmansworth has bemoaned the state of local roads after a craterous pothole she refers to as “the clump” appeared outside her house.

Karen Savva, who lives on Valley Road, has called out Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) after a large and “dangerous” pothole just outside her drive was not registered as a priority repair.

She said: “On one Saturday morning alone, there were three punctures caused by this pothole that we witnessed, and I am sure there have been numerous others.

“What impact is this going to have on the housing market in this area? We are expected to pay the new inflated council tax without question but when are we as residents going to get the service that we are paying for? How can they just keep leaving these potholes with no barriers up around them to protect people and the cars?”

Karen was told that it would take up to a month for the pothole to be treated, despite its severe state.

A spokesperson for HCC said: “We aim to make the most significant potholes safe within 24 hours, but the majority of potholes that are big enough to need rapid attention receive a first-time permanent repair either within five days or within 20 days, depending on factors like the size of the pothole and how busy the road is. Smaller, less urgent potholes are repaired as part of planned road resurfacing.

“We encourage road users to report potholes, or any other defects, to us online at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/highwayfaults. This ensures that they are in our system and, even if we can’t repair them immediately, we can use the information to help us plan our maintenance programmes.”
