The Lib Dem candidate for the Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency, Victoria Collins, was recently joined by her party’s treasury spokesperson, Sarah Olney MP, for a tour.
On Saturday, March 2, the pair spent the afternoon asking a variety of local business owners in Berkhamsted High Street about the issues currently affecting them.
Owners of shops such as homeware store Cook & Butler and cocktail bar The Lounge spoke of their challenges in running their businesses.
On this fact-finding mission, Victoria and Mrs Olney MP were joined by Berkhamsted News.
When asked about the issues that local shop owners are facing, Victoria said: “They’re really finding it harder to make ends meet.
“We’ve been talking to some really great local businesses who say that they’re being squeezed by rising energy costs and business rates.
“There are also individuals and families behind those businesses who are also being hit by the rise in costs that everyone else is facing, such as mortgages and energy costs at home.”
Mrs Olney MP added: “Victoria and I were talking to somebody this afternoon whose mortgage is going up from £300 a month to £1,100 a month, which really makes you catch your breath.
“That’s a really tangible example of the really negative impact that people here locally in Berkhamsted are feeling as a result of this incompetent Conservative government.”
