A Bushey teacher has been banned from the profession following allegations he had sent ‘sexually motivated’ messages to pupils.
Daniyal Burney, an RE teacher at St Margaret’s School from September 2022, has been found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.
Between December 2022 and July 2023, Mr Burney, then 25, exchanged emails of an “informal and/or inappropriate nature” with three students.
Despite being suspended on July 5, 2023, and told “not to contact individuals at school”, he sent a pupil messages on WhatsApp on or around July 25, 2023.
Mr Burney made admissions to 10 allegations but denied that his conduct was sexually motivated.
On Monday, March 3, it was announced that the professional conduct panel hearing made a decision that Mr Burney is “prohibited from teaching indefinitely and cannot teach in any school, Sixth Form college, relevant youth accommodation or children’s home in England”.
A spokesperson for St Margaret’s School said: “St Margaret’s School is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for students and staff.
“We can confirm that on the day concerns were raised, Mr Daniyal Burney was suspended and did not return to work. The case was referred to the police and the LADO as per the school’s Safeguarding Policy. Following an investigation on August 14, 2023, his employment was terminated.
“St Margaret’s acted swiftly and effectively and has offered support for those impacted in our community.”
