CHEERS FOR VOLUNTEERS: Actor and presenter leads thank you at Rickmansworth pub (VIDEO)

A broadcasting icon visited Rickmansworth ahead of the UK’s annual Thank You Day, placing the focus on those unsung heroes who make our communities great.

Landlady of The Feathers pub, Victoria Keen, the “original Queen Vic”, was delighted to welcome former EastEnders star and television personality Ross Kemp to the premises this morning (Monday, June 26).

Broadcasting live on ITV’s morning show, Lorraine, Kemp launched this year’s Cheers for Volunteers celebrations by toasting to local volunteers from the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), Girlguiding, Rickmansworth Waterways Trust and Pumpkin Wildlife Trust for the third annual Thank You Day, as organised by the RVS.

Ross told MyLocalNews: “I think in this country we’re quite good at volunteering, but we’re not often so good at accepting the praise for it. This is an opportunity; three years ago, we started the idea of saying thank you, whether it’s a mug of tea or a pint of beer or whatever you fancy, for people to come together to say thank you to the people who give up their free time willingly, day in day out for others. Whatever you do voluntarily, we’d like to say thank you.”

Preeti Shetty, RVS volunteer coordinator at Mill End Lunch Club, said: “We don’t volunteer for recognition; it’s rewarding to be able to give back and help others. Receiving a thanks for our efforts or cheers is always the icing on the cake!”
