COMMUNITY CELEBRATES: Residents delighted as plans for up to 800 new homes in Chorleywood scrapped

Chorleywood residents and councillors are celebrating after an appeal to build up to 800 homes on Green Street was withdrawn.

After planning permission for the site was refused, the developer appealed to the independent Planning Inspector.

However, last month, they conceded defeat, withdrawing two variants of the scheme.

Years of campaigning saw hundreds of objections submitted against the plans to build on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Councillors Ciarán Reed, Philip Hearn and Oliver Cooper have been celebrating alongside residents.

Cllrs Reed and Hearn spoke against the proposals at the Planning Committee in March.

Cllr Reed said: “Residents felt the development would bring chaos to schools, roads and the local environment while in March, former councillor Alison Wall warned that approving the plans could have unlocked a ‘massive sprawling conurbation all the way to Oxford’.”

There are concerns, however, that the developer may come back with new proposals in the new year. Councillors are preparing to defend against any more attempts at development on this site and are already warning Chorleywood residents to be ready to rally again.

Cllr Reed added: “This is a brilliant win for local people power.  We’ve been delighted to work with and speak alongside so many residents to get these proposals withdrawn – and we’re ready to win this battle again if needed.”

Oliver Neville, the Conservative candidate in the Chorleywood South by-election on December 14, said: “I’m standing with residents ready to object again if we see more plans for this site.”
