JAILED: Watford man sentenced for non-recent child sex offences

Published on: 11th November 2021   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

A man from Watford has been jailed for 12 months after being convicted of non-recent sexual offences against a young girl.

82-year-old William Kane appeared before St Albans Crown Court for sentencing today November 10 after previously being convicted on Friday October 1.

Following a five-day trial, Kane was found guilty of three charges of indecent assault on a female aged under 14 years old. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with an additional year to be served on licence.

The offences, which took place in Watford, involve a single female victim and date back to the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The court heard that Kane subjected the victim to sexual touching on a number of occasions over the course of several years.

Detective Constable Beverley Thomson, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Historic Child Abuse Investigation Unit (HCAIU), investigated Kane.

She said: “Firstly I want to publicly acknowledge the courage of the victim in this case, who has had to live with the devastating impact of Kane’s offending for more than 40 years.

“In late 2019, she made a disclosure to police and Kane was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault in January 2020. He denied the allegations and told us that the victim was a liar.

“However, he has been convicted in a court of law and justice has finally been served more than four decades on. I hope Kane’s sentencing provides the victim with a sense of closure and allows her to move forward after finally putting this chapter of her life behind her.

“I want to reassure victims of sexual abuse that we, the police, will always listen to them. However long ago the crime happened, we will do all we can to secure justice for you. Even if significant time has passed, we will do our very best to bring offenders like Kane before the courts.

“We will continue to do everything in our power to relentlessly target those who choose to commit abhorrent sexual offences against children.”
