CLUCK OFF: Residents object to plans for egg production units near Little Chalfont

Published on: 13th September 2022   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Many local residents have objected to proposals to build free-range egg production units near Little Chalfont as the plans “threaten the viability of the River Chess”.

The proposal for two mobile free-range egg production units and two feed silos on Gracie Fields Farm, Latimer Road, has received a number of objections, including some from members of the River Chess Association (RCA), an organisation that “protects and enhances the River Chess for future generations”.

The organisation labelled the application as “disingenuous”, saying the site is “totally unsuitable for this business” as it is close to a water meadow and a chalk stream, which would be affected by
pollution from chicken manure if the plans are approved.

Councillor Gareth Williams, Bucks Council’s cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “I am very concerned that this development threatens the viability of the River Chess. There has been a huge amount of cross partnership working with the likes of the River Chess Association, the Chiltern Society, the parish and unitary council and water company to make sure this globally rare and important chalk stream is nurtured and cared for.

Nearly £2million has gone in and lots of time and effort from all sorts of people and organisations to help this river thrive. We have otters, voles and numerous fish breeds all coming back. The
damage done to rivers by chicken manure is well documented and I for one don’t want to see that happen here and will be opposing this application.”

A spokesperson for Buckinghamshire Council said: “All representations will be considered as part of the planning application, which is likely to be heard by the Planning Committee on October 11.”

A spokesperson for developers Thompson & Williams, speaking on behalf of the applicant, said: “To have a true understanding of what is involved in free-range egg production with mobile units, is to see one first-hand. My client would invite anyone with concerns or questions to make direct contact.

My client will happily show them the application site and the egg production site and believes that this would put a stop to all concerns.”
