Members of a Shenley community action group decided to take matters into their own hands and clean up a notorious fly-tipping site.
According to Nicky Beaton, founder of Action for a Cleaner Shenley (ACS), lorry drivers keen to get rid of bulky waste such as fridges and sofas have long used the first lay-by on Harper Lane as a dumping point.
Growing “fed up” of deferrals to highways authorities and council departments, Nicky joined forces with fellow ACS members Jo Headland and Steve Welsh at the end of November. Together, the crew collected 36 bags of rubbish from the lay-by.
Nicky said: “Within a week, St Albans City & District Council came to collect all the rubbish we’d gathered. I’m glad we were part of the solution.”
The litter pick took the three volunteers eight hours. By the end of the day, they had emptied more than 50 bottles of urine left at the site, as well as picking up 18 tyres.
ACS collected more than 650 bags of litter in 2023, thanks to the volunteers who give up the first Saturday and Sunday of each month to make Shenley a cleaner place. To find out more and get involved, please email nickybeaton@aol.com
