Watford Chess Club (WCC) has become the first to receive the accolade of Centre of Excellence from the English Chess Federation.
The award recognises work by WCC’s team of coaches to promote junior chess.
Recently, three WCC members aged between 11 and 14 represented England in junior international events.
Head coach Roger Lancaster said: “Watford reckons to be a competitive, rather than a social, club. It runs two junior-only teams in the Hillingdon League while the stronger juniors join the adults in playing in the Hertfordshire League and the prestigious Four Nations Chess League.”
WCC is also celebrating a hugely successful September. At the UK Chess Challenge on September 21 and 22, Gautam Sriram finished joint fourth in the under 10 section, Advait Keerthi Kumar was joint second in the under 12 section, and Ananya Patel finished as the top girl.
Junior WCC members also won events in the under eights category at the competition, with the youngest WCC member being just four years old.
The club, which also caters for adults, meets each Monday evening at Herts Bowling Club on Bellmount Wood Avenue. The club is always welcoming to potential new members and those interested can find more about the club on its website at
