Mimi Harker OBE, chairman of Buckinghamshire council, undertook a skydive on Saturday, September 28, to raise money for local charities.
She never thought in a million years that she would do something like this, however when the opportunity presented itself and the wheels were set in motion, she felt she could not back out.
Cllr Harker is a self-confessed coward. Speaking to AmershamNews she said: “I can’t even begin to stress how much of a coward I am, I can’t even climb a ladder without feeling sick!”
Cllr Harker jumped from 1300ft, gaining a top speed of 120 MPH as she hurtled towards ground.
She described the experience: “The free fall was totally and utterly confusing – I could not understand what was going on.”
But when the parachute was pulled, she said: “It was like there was nobody else in the world and it was just me and I was hanging in the air, weightless. It was beautiful!”
Scannappeal, an Amersham based charity, raises funds to purchase life-saving equipment for Amersham, Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe and Community Hospitals.
Cllr Harker raised £400 for Scanappeal and an additional £1200 for her official charities – South Bucks Hospice, Oasis Partnership and Heart of Bucks.
The money raised was not the only good outcome, Cllr Harker has described the experience as “transformative.”
Cllr Harker has been inspired to uptake swimming lessons, something which she has been too scared to do previously.
She said: “It has made me think to myself that I gave to stop panicking and stop feeling scared.
“If I can do this, anyone can!”
