Shenley Parish Council has awarded a £2,000 grant to Shenley Village Cricket Club (SVCC).
Each year, SVCC must fundraise around £80,000 to cover costs, with most of the funds spent on ground maintenance.
Club secretary Chris Stanley explained that “a sizeable chunk of funding comes from membership fees”, plus social events and private donations.
This year, however, the club has found itself short of between £5,000 and £10,000.
Chris said: “I approached various council authorities and quickly received encouraging replies from three Shenley parish councillors. They invited me to a parish council meeting on February 6 and there the club was awarded a £2,000 grant.
“We’re a really important community asset that provides physical education and activities, as well as social cohesion, for hundreds of locals.
“Especially as we move into the highest Herts league division this April, we would really welcome some support from local businesses.”
