In addition to the two residents awarded with British Empire Medals who featured in our last edition, RADLETTnews has discovered two more residents who have received the prestigious accolade in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2024.

Radlett resident Lucy Thompson established the charity fundraising department at childcare provider Childbase, which has gone on to raise nearly £4million over its 35-year history.

Lucy, who retired in 2022, said: “I am hugely surprised and enormously grateful to the many people who have supported me over the years and made this honour possible. I was, and continue to be, in awe of my colleagues company-wide whose generosity, creativity and dedication to fundraising and voluntary work is simply extraordinary.”

CEO of Childbase Emma Roonery said: “Lucy revolutionised our approach to giving back with processes that support our committed fundraisers company-wide and maximise our reach. A tireless supporter and active participant in a variety of challenges, Lucy has enabled us to make a real and meaningful difference in thousands of lives.”

A second recipient of the British Empire Medal is 84-year-old Siggy Cragwell, the much-loved station assistant at Elstree & Borehamwood station.

According to Thameslink, Siggy has worked on the railway for 62 years after coming to the UK as part of the Windrush generation.

During an interview with BBC London about being Thameslink’s oldest employee, Siggy explained that he still gets up at 4am every day for his job at Elstree & Borehamwood station.

A Thameslink spokesperson said: “Siggy symbolises everything that is great about our railway family and this honour from the King is thoroughly well deserved.”
