Gerrards Cross Bowls Club (GCBC) continue to prove why they are one of the best in the country as they hosted the Malaysian Commonwealth Games squad.
The club, which is based in Maltmans Lane, welcomed the Malaysian Commonwealth Games bowls team on July 15 as they prepared for the games in Birmingham.
Members from GCBC watched the Malaysian coaching team putting the players through their paces on a day filled with comradery, encouragement and most importantly, friendly matches filled with competitiveness.
One of those friendly matches includes GCBC’s Richard Reid playing and beating the highly experienced Fairul Izwan who is a Commonwealth Games medal winner.
Izwan won bronze in Delhi in 2010, silver in Glasgow in 2014 and placed fourth in this year’s mens singles competition.
The recent Commonwealth Games also saw a huge number of medals for the English bowlers and the Gerrards Cross connection was very much there.
The elite performance director, John McGuinness and England manager Kirk Smith are all members and very regular bowlers at GCBC.
John McGuinness said: “It has been an absolute pleasure in having the Malaysian team here.
“One reason is that we are good friends and we have known each other for a couple of years, and the second reason is that we were given an opportunity to play against some of the world’s best and we loved it.
“This is a sport where everyone is very friendly and that’s the way it should be.”
Success has continued for GCBC with a number of players reaching the county finals with the potential of national success in September.
