BREAKING: Eight fire engines attend ‘massive fire’ at Oaklands College

Oaklands College in St Albans has been evacuated after reports that a “massive” fire has broken out.

Herts Fire and Rescue have confirmed Oaklands College Sports Centre is “internally alight” and that heavy clouding is above the college.

They were contacted about the fire at 12.19pm and sent two fire engines to the scene. Another four were sent by 12.47pm and another two have been sent since.

Oaklands College confirmed via Twitter that all students are all safe.

The tweet read: “Fire brigade are on site dealing with a fire at the Discovery Centre, St Albans campus. We can confirm students and staff are all safe and well.”

Onlookers who contacted MyNews about the fire described it as “really bad”.

One said: “It looks like everyone has got out safe but the sports hall and discovery centre is in the centre of the fire. It is really bad.”

Herts Police, who were also called to the scene of the fire, said officers are at the scene to stop vehicles from entering the grounds.

The fire reference is 9229. The ambulance service has also been made aware – reference 1519.
