BOWLED OVER: Brilliant Gerrards Cross bowls foursome win the British Championships

Four members of Gerrards Cross Bowls Club (GCBC) including a father-son duo have won the British Isles Championships.

Kirk Smith, Tom McGuinness, John McGuinness and David Ross represented England as they took the British title after beating Wales in the semi-final before seeing off Republic of Ireland in the final.

The foursome had won the English National Title in 2019 but following the Covid-19 pandemic which began in March 2020, the group had to wait three years until they were able to partake in one of the most prestigious events in the bowls calendar.

It is the first time in the club’s history that four players at the same time have won the competition.

In the semi-final against Wales and with a local partisan crowd to contend with, the team from South Buckinghamshire won 22-14 having been in a commanding position throughout the contest.

They would go on to defeat Ireland in the final 23-18 in what was a close match.

GCBC president, David Hall, said: “We are so proud of our team that has represented England so well and have become UK champions for the very first time in our history.

“It is a quite amazing achievement and demonstrates the quality of bowlers at our club.

“However I should also state that we have many social bowlers who enjoy a very friendly and relaxing game. We really do have the best of both worlds at Gerrards Cross”.
