BLOOMIN’ LOVELY: Amersham receives gold medals in annual Bloom Awards

Published on: 10th October 2024   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Amersham had a golden afternoon at the Bloom Awards, scooping gold medals in three categories.

Held in Woodley on Wednesday, September 25, Amersham was awarded gold medals in the Town Bloom category and for the Memorial Gardens, and was also was named best town in the region.

But the success did not stop there. Amersham also won three discretionary awards, which are given to a town that shows excellence within a certain category, for Pride of Place, Horticulture, and Working with Children and Young People.

Speaking to Amersham News, Steve Catanach, town clerk and lead coordinator of Amersham in Bloom, said: “These awards don’t just happen; they are a testament to the hard work of so many, which includes the support of businesses, schools and many other local groups.”

“The town council is indebted to the bloom volunteers and the leaders of the 1st Chesham Bois Scout group who collaborate with my ever-supportive colleagues, each going above and beyond to improve Amersham, the town that we love and call home.”

This year, efforts were focused on increasing the towns sustainability, improving biodiversity, and increasing environmental engagement with children and young people.

The team sowed 20 per cent more seeds this year, including eight new patches of wildflowers.

Another success story from Amersham in Bloom is the art can be seen around town. This includes the sculptures and communications boxes which were all painted by local artists, volunteers and school students, with the youngest participant being just four years old.

The judges said: “The impact when one walks into the Amersham Memorial Gardens is breathtaking. The look of wonderment on faces of a group of ladies looking at the Peace Gardens must sum up the reaction so many feel.

“There were so many wow factors in the judging tour, not least the butterfly and bee corner- two remarkably impactful displays, packed with interest, colour and both with an eye on sustainability.”

There was an outpouring of gratitude for the Amersham in Bloom team on Facebook, with one contributor saying: “This is real visible work that brings joy and happiness to the entire community on a daily basis.”

Another said: “So proud of living here with people who do so much for the community.”

A third person added: “Congratulations to everyone concerned. Amersham always looks exceptional with the floral displays.”
