A devastating fire has broken out at a scrapyard near Rickmansworth Aquadrome this morning.
Eight fire engines and 65 firefighters were sent to the scene from both the London Fire Brigade and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue teams.
The Herts Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 9.41 am, with crews arriving at the recycling centre on Springwell Lane in Harefield around 10.00 am.
A spokesperson at the service said: “I didn’t realise it was quite as big a fire as it actually is.”
Another London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Around 80 tonnes of scrap metal is alight.
“The fire is producing a large amount of smoke and people in the local area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed at this time due to smoke travel.
“The brigade was first notified about this incident at 9.41am, and control officers mobilised crews from Ruislip, Harrow and Hillingdon fire stations to the scene. Several crews are also in attendance from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, alongside an appliance from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.”
The London Fire Brigade confirmed Springwell Lane has been closed.
