A former St Clement Danes School student is preparing for her biggest career move yet: taking her new play to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Kitty Sharland’s love for drama, particularly directing, developed while she was a student at Manchester University, where she had joined the drama society.
After years of performing in Manchester, as well as launching her own theatre company, Kitty wanted to aim bigger. Working together with playwright Rosa Honey Gatley, producer Ella Raffe and assistant producer Katie Tuson, she applied for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Talking to CHORLEYWOODnews, Kitty said: “I have a lot of friends who have performed at Edinburgh Fringe before which was helpful, but we were hesitant for a while to apply. It involves a lot of money and time.
“But when we were told we were performing, it was amazing! Getting that validation is so rewarding.”
The show, entitled Disco 2000, is based around the reuniting of two childhood friends, Bonnie, played by Arabella Finch, and Amelia, played by Stella Cohen.
Kitty explained that the show is inspired by the award-winning 2023 movie Past Lives, adding that she is a “fan of lots of different theatre and films” so loves “bringing together different ideas and making a mood board”.
She continued: “We are all feeling good. We are doing a preview in Manchester before which will show us what stage the play is at, and get some audience feedback, but it feels like it is all coming together!
“I went to my first Edinburgh Fringe in 2023 as a viewer and I had the best time. It is such a great environment; the whole city comes alive with art.”
