BENEVOLENT BOOKS: Pay-it-forward scheme gives back to St Albans community

Once upon a time, there was an independent bookshop on Holywell Hill whose staff wanted to give back to the local community.

Books on the Hill have spoken to STALBANSnews about their ‘pay-it-forward’ scheme.

Shoppers can choose to leave a donation which can be paid forward for someone who otherwise may struggle to afford a book. The scheme runs on a no questions asked policy.

Ross, the shop’s assistant manager, said: “It is none of our business why you need to use the vouchers – they are there to be used and if it has allowed someone to buy a book, then it has done its job.

“I understand that there could be apprehension, but the shop is a judgement-free, safe space.

“The scheme’s only requirement is that you like reading – if you like books, then the scheme is for you.”

Inspired by a similar initiative that runs in Edinburgh, the Books on the Hill owner saw it and decided “this is something we absolutely have to do in St Albans”.

The team see the scheme as a way of giving back to the community, who are so integral to their continued success.
