HAIR (FUND)RAISING! Tring man grows hair for four years for donation to wig charity

A Tring resident is sharing his four-year hair growth journey after donating his long locks to a wig charity.

In the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Clive Hodghton decided to shave his head. It was after this that he had the idea to grow out his hair again and donate it to The Little Princess Trust. The charity turns donated hair into wigs for young people who have lost their hair due to illness.

Speaking to TRINGnews, Clive said: “I told a few of my friends what I was doing, and it was only then that I checked the website and saw that they only accept hair 12 to 14 inches long. I was like ‘Oh no, what have I done?’.

“It was very daunting, but I was committed.”

Clive admitted that the four years of growing his hair were quite frustrating, particularly when he got to the awkward stage of not being able to tie it all up, but still had it falling in his face. On one occasion, someone had even asked Clive if he was in a rock band due to his hairstyle, but Clive was motivated by the challenge and continued on.

Last month, Clive and his wife Carolyn were relaxing at The Anchor Tring, when Carolyn suggested that he finish his journey and finally cut his hair. Although hesitant at first, Clive was relieved to finally have enough hair to donate and be rid of his long tresses.

Clive said: “A huge thank you must go to everyone who has put up with me and helped and supported me through this process; it’s been fun!

“Another massive thank you goes to Chelsea at K S Barbers in Tring, who was fabulous and so much fun. She made me look younger.”
