A group of young people kicked the door of a property in Oak Green Way, Abbots Langley, before setting fire to the doormat, at around 5.30pm on Monday, February 19.
Officers are now appealing for information and witnesses following the arson attack.
PC Conor Fountain, from the Abbots Langley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Officers attended the scene alongside the fire and rescue service. The owner of the property is a lady in her seventies who is understandably very shaken up. Thankfully she was unhurt but this reckless behaviour could have resulted in a very different outcome.
“I am appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch. Were you in the area? Did you see something suspicious? Any information you have could be vital to our investigation.
“Please get in touch by emailing me at Conor.fountain@herts.police.uk.”
